A Very Special Deal

Last week, the Warner Archive had a Columbus Day Sale in which you could buy 5 selected titles for $50.00. Since WA titles usually sell for $17-$18, this is always a good deal for classic film buffs like myself.
After I got the notice of the sale, I went to the WA site and started making selections. What surprised me was that, as well as the usual single disc DVD titles being offered, there were several multiple disc box sets that usually sell for $30-$50. Naturally, I made my selections from that group, then I checked out and charged my 5 selections to my credit card.
Then, I went back to see it there was anything that I missed and, suddenly, the WA site was no longer available. Apparently, somebody had screwed up and had included these multiple disc sets in the sale when they should not have.
I got in just under the wire and a few days ago, I received my box of discs that included THE JEAN HARLOW COLLECTION (7 movies), Seasons 2 and 3 of CHEYENNE and Season 4 of MAVERICK. I also got single discs of A LIFE IN THE THEATRE and, purchased separately, SUMMER OF '42.
I must take my hat off (if I wore a hat) to WA for honoring their error.
Speaking of DVDs, there's new review of SNOWPIERCER on the Best Bets on DVD site, accessible via the link in the Introduction section of this page.

R.I.P. Terry

Early Saturday morning, I received a call from my son, David. His mother, Terry, had passed away in Medford, OR from heart failure. She was, I believe, 81-82 years old and had not been in the best of health the past couple of years.
Although we had not been together since 1978, I still cared about Terry...despite our differences. I owe her a lot. Indeed, I'm not sure I would have had the courage to actually leave Seattle back in 1963 to pursue my Hollywood dream if she had not challenged me to do so. We did have some good times together.
R.I.P., dear Terry.

This past week, while waiting to get the proof copy of MURDER IN BABYLON, my novel about the William Desmond Taylor murder, I not only resumed work on the next play in THE HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS collection, but I'm also doing a book trailer for a friend's recently published memoir.
This next revelation may surprise those of you who know me, but I'm finding that I've really lost my interest in watching movies lately. Maybe it's age, or perhaps it's just that I haven't come across any good films. Or, perhaps it's that I've "seen it all" and there's nothing that can "surprise" me any longer. I don't know.
I recall, several years ago, my friend, Charles Champlin, the editor of the Los Angeles Times Entertainment Section, said that he'd lost the thrill of seeing movies. So, as I said, maybe it is age or overexposure.
